Every time someone dies in the pop culture world who had a small part to play in my childhood, I get a bit nostalgic. The most recent case, of course, was Gary Coleman.
Unfortunately, the only episodes of Diff'rent Strokes that I remember are the more serious adventures of Arnold Jackson. Like the one where the hitchhiker kidnapped him and Kimberly or the one where the bike shop owner tried to diddle Arnold's best friend, Dudley.
The one that hit me the worst was when John Ritter died a few years ago. Three's Company was my favorite show growing up. It wasn't till I was a teen watching reruns that I caught how much of the show was based on wacky sexual innuendoes and homophobic misunderstandings. No wonder I'm so messed up. Thanks a lot, Jack Tripper.
But, when I get nostalgic, I don't usually think back to the '80s when I was a kid. I think back to the '90s when I was a "young adult" and things in pop culture really started meaning something to me to the point that I would eventually found a website a decade later celebrating that very culture of pop. Hey, I'm a procrastinator and the internet was readily available in those days.
During my recent nostalgia kick, I wrote down a list of the things that I don't really think about on a regular basis, but still have had a profound effect on my life in some way.
I present to you, My '90s Nostalgia Pop Culture List:
- Starting the decade with The Simpsons, "progressing" with Beavis and Butthead, and ending the decade with South Park.
- Ray Charles and "You got the right one, baby" Pepsi commercials.

- Those slap bracelets that my school outlawed because they were made from flexible stainless steel and, I guess, they were afraid us 4th graders would make a makeshift shiv from them and mutiny.
- "So fast, other DJ's say damn. If my rhyme was a drug, I'd sell it by the gram"
- And also, "A - 1- A, Detroit Avenue"
- Cool Spot, the 7-Up spot.
- Super Mario World
- See also: Yoshi
- Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and the steroids they took.
- Michelangelo, the ninja turtle with nunchucks, not the painter.
- That godawful Street Fighter movie where the dude that played Gomez Addams in the remakes of The Addams Family was M. Bison and, allegedly, a badass.
- Speaking of The Addams Family, MC Hammer's "Addams Family Groove"
- Laughing like Butthead was the "That's what she said" of the '90s....huh-huh-huh-huh...whenever someone said anything that could be a double entendre.
- Mr. Woodchuck. "Is that table made of......wood?"
- huh huh huh huh. You said, "wood".

- Starting the decade with DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, MC Hammer, and Vanilla Ice; progressing to the Notorious B.I.G. and 2Pac; and ending the decade with Jay-Z, Nas, and Eminem.
- The handclaps in the Friends theme song.
- Being Master of my domain.
- And having a great love for shows about nothing.
- Michelle Pffeiffer as Catwoman in Batman Returns.

- The theme song to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Everyone sing along.
- Jessie Spano, Lisa Turtle, and, of course, Kelly Kapowski.
- "Go Ninja, Go Ninja Go"
- "You can learn a lot from a dummy"
- Eric Stoltz, who was in every single Generation X indie movie about young slackers who wanted more out of life during the '90s.
- Beethoven, the St. Bernard movie star, not the classic composer and pianist.
- Huh huh huh huh. You said pianist.
- That episode of Beavis and Butthead where Beavis cuts off his finger and it won't stop bleeding.
- Darkwing Duck

- TGIF
- Having my whole life ahead of me with nothing but endless possibilities waiting for me.
I miss that last thing the most.
