Freddy Krueger in Mortal Kombat 9 and other Video Game Crossovers

Posted by Miserable Retail Slave on July 28, 2011 at 8:56 PM Comments comments (0)
Video game developers have always catered to the nerd audience by including subtle (and sometimes, not-so-subtle) crossovers with other areas of pop culture that also appeal to the Starfleet insignia-shaped pleasure center of the standard nerd's brain.

In the biggest heart-stopping nerd-gasm since Mario was finally able to take on Sonic the Hedgehog in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Warner Bros. announced that Freddy Krueger would be available to download for Mortal Kombat 9 as a playable character.

Krueger fits reasonably well into the mystic and murderous world of the Mortal Kombat universe. Yes, I just typed the phrase "mystic and murderous" and, no, I am not happy about it.

I had no real desire to buy Mortal Kombat 9, mainly because I am completely inept at mashing the buttons crisply enough to properly execute the moves in any fighting game. Whenever I hear the words "Finish Him!" and I see my opponent helpless and dazed, the adrenaline kicks in. You only have a 5 second window to push the buttons in the correct sequence to unleash a finisher and my nerves just can't handle the pressure.

At any rate, this Freddy Krueger playable character is enough to pique my interest in the game. At least a little bit.

In honor of this announcement, I present to you a list, in no particular order, of notable video game crossover moments. These may be interesting, ridiculous, or a mixture of both.

This list does not include games completely devoted to crossovers or celebrities. Don't wonder why X-Men vs Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, or even Celebrity Death Match isn't on the list. This list isn't complete either, so if I left some game out, I fully acknowledge that fact.

1. Soulcalibur II (2003) for Xbox and Gamecube

The Gamecube version of the title featured Nintendo icon, Link from the Legend of Zelda series, while the Xbox port's guest character was Todd McFarlane's popular comic book creation, Spawn.

Spawn seems like a suitable choice for a guest fighting game character, but Link isn't necessarily one of the first characters most players would choose to control. Link is, however, one of the most "realistic" characters in Nintendo's arsenal, so if Nintendo and Soulcalibur's developers were intent on including a Nintendo character, then Link is one of the most logical choices.

This wouldn't be the last time that the Soulcalibur series would include outside characters in their title in order to drum up interest in the franchise.

2. Soulcalibur IV for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360

This time around Soulcalibur made a bold decision to contact George Lucas about including characters from the Star Wars universe in their game. Including the Secret Apprentice from the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is one thing, but these games featured Darth Vader and Yoda.

Star Wars fans didn't like it. Soulcalibur fans didn't like it. But, it's still pretty cool.

3. Clayfighter 63 1/3 (1997) for N64

Earthworm Jim was a character in the '90s who achieved a high level of popularity inside and outside of the video game community. Cartoons, comics, action figures, Earthworm Jim was a character that was poised to reach Mario and Sonic levels of popularity…until the character just went away.

Not only was Earthworm Jim featured in this game, but also another outside '90s creation called Boogerman, who flicked boogers and propelled himself by farting. Boogerman was cast in the game as Jim's arch-enemy. Ah, the '90s. Nostalgia.

4. WWF Smackdown! Just Bring It (2001) and Fight Club (2004)

Fred Durst. He was in Smackdown because the Undertaker used to use Limp Bizkit's "Rollin'" as entrance music. He was in Fight Club because….I'm not sure why he was in it. But it gives you the opportunity to destroy something beautiful. Or at least Fred Durst.

5. UFC Undisputed 2010

Shaquille O' Neal as a hidden fighter in an MMA game? Shaq has trained in MMA for a few years, so…this…is…an…obvious….crossover? But would an MMA rather play as Rampage Jackson or Shaq.

6. Punch Out!! for Wii

The original game for the Nintendo featured Mike Tyson as the champion or final boss. Tyson was one of the first celebrities, athletes or otherwise, to lend their likeness to a high profile video game.

Twelve years later, using Mike Tyson as a final boss is neither financially or commercially viable. So, who would be it? Who would be the seemingly unbeatable opponent that Little Mac has to defeat?

Donkey Kong. Ugh.

You need Adobe Flash Player to view this content.

7. Call of Duty: Black Ops

In a very cool (at least in my opinion) crossover moment, the downloadable Escalation Zombie map includes well-known actors who made their living playing cult characters in supernatural settings against hordes of zombies.

Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Danny Trejo (Machete), Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger), and Michael Rooker (Merle from "The Walking Dead"). Not only that, but the "father" of the zombie movies, George Romero makes an appearance as an enemy in the map.

8. Madden NFL 11

Guiding  your favorite team to a Super Bowl victory has always been the goal, but the reward has always seemed underwhelming. This version enhances the post game celebrations with award presentations, parades, and a visit to the White House to meet President Obama. A president has never made an appearance in a Madden game before, but this crossover seems like a natural fit for a president who is a known sports fanatic.

The 30 Greatest Wrestlers of All-Time…In My Opinion

The Final List D: 5 through 1

Here it is, folks – the moment we’ve all been waiting for.

Thanks for tuning in and checking out this list here on MRS. We really appreciate the support – even if you only have a minute to take a look.

So who are the five best wrestlers ever, according to Walnuts?

5. Bret Hart

Nickname: "The Excellence of Execution"

Accomplishments: 5-time WWF Champion, 2-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion, 2-time WWF Intercontinental Champion, 4-time WCW United States Heavyweight Champion, 2-time WWF Tag Team Champion, WCW World Tag Team Champion, 1991 and 1993 King of the Ring, 1994 Royal Rumble winner, 2006 WWE Hall of Fame

This may very well be my favorite wrestler ever. I was a Chris Benoit fan, but…well, anyways. Bret Hart’s slogan is, “the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.” Years ago, this may have been more of a tool to rile up the crowd than anything. But as time passed and the accomplishments stacked up, it became the truth, for many. What an incredibly talented technical wrestler from an established family.

4. Sting

Accomplishments: 6-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion, 2-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, 3-time TNA World Heavyweight Champion, 2-time WCW International World Heavyweight Champion, 2-time United States Heavyweight Champion, NWA World Television Champion, 3-time WCW World Tag Team Champion, TNA World Tag Team Champion

This one wrestler carried WCW on his back for years and years. Even WWE fans, who seemed to hate everyone from their rival company, loved Sting. I always admired him for never crossing over to the WWE, even after WCW when defunct. He is simply one of the most recognizable figures in the sport’s history, and the ultimate face.

3. Hulk Hogan/Hollywood Hogan

Nickname: "The Immortal"

Accomplishments: 6-time WWF/E Champion, 6-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion, WWE World Tag Team Champion, 1990 and 1991 Royal Rumble Winner, 2005 WWE Hall of Fame

Personally, I always liked him more as Hollywood. He performed better as a heel than as a face. But whether we’re talking about Hulk or Hollywood, we know we’re referring to the most iconic wrestler in the history of the sport. He is part of the reason Ted Turner and Vince McMahon became millionaires. His move set is terrible, and most of his matches are predictable and anticlimactic, but his status and popularity easily put him in the top five.

2. Ric Flair

Nickname: "The Nature Boy"

Accomplishments: 8-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion, 7-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, 2-time WWF Champion, 2-time WCW International Heavyweight Champion, 6-time NWA/WCW United States Heavyweight Champion, WWF Intercontinental Champion, 3-time NWA World Tag Team Champion, 3-time WWE Tag Team Champion, 1992 Royal Rumble Winner, 2008 WWE Hall of Fame

Easily the most boisterous and flamboyant character in my lifetime, Ric performed at a high level even as his body began to show clear signs of age. His once impressive figure eventually began to break down and sag in many places, but Ric still knew how to put on a show. He was a fan’s wrestler and loved entertaining people. His backchop was deadly, but he was also hilarious. His patented strut and “Whoo” put fans on their feet and kept them there. There may not be a more impressive figure in wrestling history, simply because of his endurance and longevity. He is the Nolan Ryan of professional wrestling. I wept during his retirement ceremony.

1. The Undertaker

Accomplishments: 4-time WWF Champion, 3-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion, 6-time WWE Tag Team Champion, WCW Tag Team Champion, WWF Hardcore Champion, 2007 Royal Rumble winner

‘Taker is easily the most frightening and mysterious wrestler in history. When we consider him for this list, we need not look further than his unparalleled success at Wrestlemania. To this day, he remains undefeated with a mind-boggling 19-0 record. We can compare this to a football team being 19-0 in the Super Bowl. In other words, it’s stupid to even think about because it seems impossible.

The Undertaker has always been the one constant in WWE. We saw Hogan’s rise and fall, but ‘Taker was still there. We saw The Rock’s rise and fall, but again, ‘Taker hung around. We saw Steve Austin’s rise to fame and success, but even after he faded away, ‘Taker’s place in wrestling remained strong.
The lowest point in his career came when the writers for WWE decided to change his character to the American Bad Ass. This made him a gimmicky character (as if he already weren’t) and fans loved him because he was a symbol of strength and success during the 9/11 era. However, personally, I always saw this as a sort of rape of a great character, and a ploy by Vince McMahon to profit off the 9/11 tragedy. Thankfully for all of us, he eventually became “evil” again, and a hybrid of the old ‘Taker came to the forefront again.

WWE is one of the most successful companies in the entertainment business. It has had many recognizable stars, some of them on this list of thirty. But only one man (besides Vince McMahon) has remained the face of the franchise for the last 20+ years, and that’s why he’s number one in my book.

The 30 Greatest Wrestlers of All-Time, In My Opinion List A: 30 through 21

The 30 Greatest Wrestlers of All-Time…In My Opinion

List A: 30 through 21

In light of “Macho Man” Randy Savage’s tragic death, I decided to compile a list of who I believe are the greatest wrestlers of all-time to see how he stacks up. There are a few rules, however, that I’ll go over quickly.

First, all of these wrestlers had to have performed in my lifetime. If I haven’t seen them wrestle, then they don’t make the list. So a lot of the old-timers like Gorgeous George and Lou Thesz are not included here. I have to see someone wrestle and entertain to make a personal judgment.

Second, these wrestlers are not only from WWE, but from WCW as well. Many of the greats wrestled for both companies, but some remained loyal to one or the other.

The last rule is that each wrestler had to be a great entertainer, whether as a heel or a face. These wrestlers all won over the crowd, either by inspiring raucous cheers or hate-filled boos. What makes a wrestler great goes beyond his ability in the ring; he has to be able to rile the crowd up.

So, without any further delay, here is my list of numbers 30 through 21.

30. Eddie Guerrero

Nickname: "Latino Heat"
Accomplishments: WWE Champion, 2-time WWE Intercontinental Champ, WWE United States Champ, 4-time WWE Tag Team Champ, WCW United States Heavyweight Champ, 2-time WCW Cruiserweight Champ, 2-Time WWF European Champ, 2-time ECW World Television Champ, 2006 WWE Hall of Fame

Nicknames: "Big Poppa Pump", "Big, Bad Booty Daddy"

Accomplishments: WCW World Heavyweight Champion, 2-time WCW United States Heavyweight Champ, 7-time WCW World Tag Team Champ, 2-time WWF Tag Team Champ, TNA Tag Team Champ, 2-time IGWP Tag Team Champ, 2-time WCW World Television Champ

27. Curt Hennig (a.k.a. Mr. Perfect)

2-Time WWF Intercontinental Champ, 2-time WCW United States Heavyweight Champ, WCW World Tag Team Champ

26. “Ravishing” Rick Rude

24. Booker T

Nicknames: "King Booker", "GI Bro"

Accomplishments: 5-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion, WWE World Heavyweight Champion, 11-time WCW World Tag Team Champion, 3-time WWE World Tag Team Champion, WCW United States Heavyweight Champion, WWE Intercontinental Champion, 3-time WWE United States Heavyweight Champion, 6-time WCW World Television Champion, 2-time WWE Hardcore Champion, TNA Legends Champion, TNA World Tag Team Champion, 2006 King of the Ring

23. Scott Hall (a.k.a. Razor Ramon)

Nicknames: "The Bad Guy", "Last Call Hall"

Accomplishments: 4-time WWF Intercontinental Champion, 2-time WCW United States Heavyweight Champion, 7-time WCW World Tag Team Champion, WCW World Television Champion, TNA World Tag Team Champion

22. Kurt Angle

Accomplishments: 4-time WWE Champion, WWE World Heavyweight Champion, 4-time TNA World Heavyweight Champion, WWE Tag Team Champion, TNA World Tag Team Champion, WWF Intercontinental Champion, TNA X-Division Champion, 2000 King of the Ring

21. Diamond Dallas Page

The Top Ten Coolest Looking Horror/Sci Fi characters

You can read #20-15 here

You can read #14-11 here

10. Lord of Darkness (Legend)

The ultimate evil from the Tom Cruise horror Legend. I call it "horror" not because it's scary, but because it is a film abomination. If I remember right, the Lord here is killed with a unicorn horn to the chest. That's not too badass. But the make-up job on Tim Curry is top notch.

#9 Gremlins (Gremlins, Gremlins 2: The New Batch)

Cute, cuddly teddy bear things at first. But then you go and feed them after midnight and this is what you get. Scaly, reptile things that live for death and destruction. So, if you feed a Mogwai a twinkie at 11:59 and he finishes chewing it before 12, does he still slip into cocoon mode? Just how time sensitive is a Mogwai's stomach?

#8 Regan MacNeil (The Exorcist)

Creepy and disturbing. That just about sums up The Exorcist. Who can deny Linda Blair's equally haunting performance? This is what nightmares are made of. Just don't tell that fried dude from Elm Street that I said that.

#7 Terminator

To be clear, I'm not talking about the Arnold-skinned version of the Terminator. I'm talking about the stripped down, true appearance of the Terminator. It's just a metal skeleton with glowing red eyes, but it's hard to deny its coolness factor.

#6 Jabba the Hutt (Return of the Jedi)

He's a fat, slug-like slob who gorges on frogs and keeps his women on short leashes and minimal clothing. He was gangsta before it was cool to be so.

#5 Gollum (Lord of the Rings)

Gollum is the greatest accomplishment of CGI thus far. He's a large part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and thanks to technology and perfect voice acting, Gollum seems like a living, breathing creature of glutton and greed.

#4 Leatherface (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre)

I prefer the original, you may favor the newer models. Either way, he's a big guy who wears a mask made of human skin and wields a chainsaw to mutilate his victims. Either way, he's pretty frightening.

#3 Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street)

See above. Original, not the newer model. One the most iconic and perfect horror creations ever.

#2 Pinhead (Hellraiser)

I've never seen any of the Hellraiser movies. I don't know the first thing about them. I don't know what Pinhead does or where he comes from. But I do know one thing: he looks pretty sweet, which is good enough for this list.

#1 Predator

When Arnold confronts the alien in the first Predator, it is one of the greatest moments in sci-fi history. The slow removal of the Predator's helmet to reveal the previously unseen face underneath is worth the wait.

If you missed it last week, click here to view # 20-15

14. Candyman (Tony Todd, Candyman, Candyman 2: Farewell to the Flesh, Candyman 3: Day of the Dead)

You have to give actor Tony Todd credit for making the Candyman into an imposing figure. With the wrong actor in the role, you would just have a lame guy wearing an overcoat with a hook for a hand (see: I Know What You Did Last Summer). There's going to be a lot said about Candyman on Friday. You've heard about the Miserable Retail Slave Movie Club, right? Check back then for more on Candyman.

13. The Thing (John Carpenter's The Thing)

Horror movies in the '80s were, in my opinion, more effective in terms of their special effects. With all the advances in technology, movies have used CGI effects as a crutch rather than use basic knowledge of science to create realistic effects. Behold, this clip from The Thing. Nuff said.

You need Adobe Flash Player to view this content.

12. The Creature From The Black Lagoon (Creature From The Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature, The Creature Walks Among Us)

The Creature From The Black Lagoon was released in 1954 and was one of the first movies to be shown in 3-D. This fact always amuses me. 3D has been around since the '50s, but within the last few years it has experienced an amazing resurgence as if it is some sort of cutting edge new technology.

Obviously, the 3D quality has improved over the years, but still. At any rate, take a look at The Creature or "Gill Man" as he is called. Pretty great design. The concept of a humanoid fish man could have resulted in something extremely ridiculous, but whoever created Gill Man's look deserves some kudos. Good work, sir.

11. Alien (Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, Alien vs Predator series)

If you took a cockroach and battered it with radiation for years, it might grow up to look like the alien from the Alien. Not really, I know. The coolest part of the Alien was the little alien tongue that had its own teeth and, seemingly, a life of its own.

SInce I was a demented little kid, I always imagined that the Aliens lived on the planet Melmac and used to dine on Alf's people for dinner. Seriously. I thought that since bears occasionally eat or attack people, the Aliens did the same thing. Forget the Alien vs. Predators. I want to see my dream project: Alien vs. Alf.

Top 20 Coolest Looking Horror/Sci-Fi Characters: 20-15

by RFP

As part of our celebration of Halloween, we present to you a list of the coolest looking characters from horror and sci-fi movies. The only rules for making this list are 1. Only characters who first appeared in film and 2. They must look cool.

Sorry Michael Myers. Wearing a Captain Kirk mask that has been painted white does not a cool appearance make. Without further ado...

20. Ghostface (as played by various actors, Scream franchise)

The main disguise of the various murderers throughout the Scream series is simple, yet effective. You take a generic mask of a phantom, give it a knife, and a creepy phone voice and you got yourself a bona fide cinematic serial killer.

19. Chucky (Brad Dourif, Child's Play series)

Everyone had that one toy that just didn't look right. The one that you swore was watching you. The one that you secretly threw under your bed each night because you were afraid of what it would do in the dark. Chucky is the culmination of those fears. A psychotic's mind in the body of a demented-looking little doll.

18. Wolf Man (Lon Chaney, Jr, The Wolf Man, Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman, House of Dracula, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein)

You can keep all your fancy computer-enhanced transformation effects and CGI werewolves. All you need is a talented make-up artist and the patience to spend 3 hours in a chair. This is the first incarnation of a werewolf that I had ever seen and it's still the best. Chaney's portrayal is more man than wolf and it works better than the majority of the werewolf flicks that have been released in recent years.

17. Jason Voorhees (Kane Hodder and various actors, Friday the 13th series)

First he was that deformed guy that came out of the water and dragged the lone survivor of the original Friday the 13th to the bottom of Crystal Lake. Next, he had a bag over his head. Thank God, he stumbled upon an old school goalie mask. Thanks, Jason, for being hockey's biggest fan.

16. Godzilla (various actors, various movies with "Godzilla" in the title)

For the record, this is the world famous Godzilla of 346 different movies and not the T-Rex on steroids as seen in the 1998 US version starring Inspector Gadget himself, Mathew Brodderick.

Godzilla boasts a simple design, whether he be a prehistoric creature awakened from a deep slumber or the unintentional atomic afterbirth created by the carelessness of humans, what you really have is a giant, fire breathing dragon that likes to destroy shit.

15. Frankenstein (Boris Karloff, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein)

Despite the multitude of Frankenstein-inspired films that followed the original, Boris Karloff played the monster only three times. Yet, his version is the image that most likely pops into your head when someone says the word, "Frankenstein." Iconic is the best way to describe Karloff's performance.

Check back later in the week for numbers 14-11!

The Greatest Movie Villains of All Time: 50-31

I like to make lists.  Something about ranking stuff like I'm some kind of authority really blows my hair back.

So I decided to rank the best silver screen villains of all time.  As I looked over the finished product, I realized it was a very modern list.  This proves my theory that old movies blow.

There were a couple of guidelines I used to disqualify a few bad guys.  First, the villain had to be played on screen by an actor/actress.  This disqualified Scar from "The Lion King", and the shark from "Jaws".  When i realized that Count Dracula from the 1931 version of "Dracula" was the only bad guy in a movie older than 35 years, it had to go.  Sorry Bella Legosi.

Also, I'm going to have another major award for whoever can guess the most of the top ten.  So without further ado...................

50. Dark helmet (Rick Moranis) - "Spaceballs"

49. Payton Flanders (Rebecca de Mornay)-  "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle"
48. Ike Turner (Lawrence Fishburne) -  "What's Love Got to Do With It?"
47. Dad Meiks (Bill Paxton) - "Frailty"
46. Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) - The Departed"
45. Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) - "Fight Club"

44. Debo (Tiny "Zues" Lister) - "Friday"
43. Warden Norton (Bob Gunton) - The Shawshank Redemption"
42. John Doe (Kevin Spacey) -  "se7en"
41."Little" Bill Daggett (Gene Hackman) - "The Unforgiven"
40. Dr. Evil (Mike Myers) - "Austin Powers"
39. The Joker (Jack Nicholson) - "Batman"

38. Warden Glenn (Gary Oldman) - "Murder in the First"
37. Ghostface (Skeet Ulrich, Mathew Lillard) - "Scream"

36. Benny Blanco from the Bronx (John Liguizamo) - "Carlito's Way"
35. Khan (Ricardo Montalban) - "Star Trek II: Revenge of Khan"

34. Biff Tannen "mad dog" tannen (Thomas F Wilson) - "Back to the Future"
33. Ezazel (John Goodman) - "Fallen"
32. Mr. Smith (Hugo Weaving) - "The Matrix"

31. Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) - "American Gangster"

So... Here is another actor that was hard to narrow down for me. I think that he is also one of the greats, and there are about 23 performances that should get an honorable mention, including that of his infamous pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow. But, since this is a list in Xena's world, I get to choose my favorites.

1. Blow (2001) ~ “George Jung”
Why is it Johnny Depp is so good in drug movies? It all started with a young man selling pot to make ends meet in California, and it quickly snowballs into a cocaine operation that is fueled by Pablo Escobar. Throw in a prison sentence, a crazy wife, a DEA/CIA set-up and it turns into sheer heartbreak. “Hey, am I wearing lipstick? I said, am I wearing lipstick? When I'm getting fucked I want to make sure my face looks pretty.”

2. Donnie Brasco (1997) ~ “Donnie Brasco/Joseph D. 'Joe' Pistone"
Based on the true story of an undercover FBI agent that takes down an influential Mafia family. The cost is great for the agent, while his family is torn apart and he begins to develop a real bond with his Mafia family, particularly Al Pacino's character, Lefty. His world is uprooted when the FBI pulls the plug on the operation. “All my life I've tried to be the good guy, the guy in the white fucking hat. And for what? For nothing. I'm not becoming like them; I am them.”

3. Edward Scissorhands (1990) ~ “Edward Scissorhands”
Back before every Tim Burton/Johnny Depp venture was mediocre bull-dookey. Who would have throught the story of a boy with scissors for his hands would be so heartwarming? He gets to find true love, and skills to make him a productive member of society (who knew people wanted hedges in the shape of dinosaurs?). “Kevin, you wanna play scissors, paper, stone again?”

4. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1999) ~ “Raoul Duke”
Based on a not-quite fictional event in the life of Hunter S. Thompson, this is one cracked out movie. Literally. I once had the urge to watch this so much, that I left my house in the middle of a blizzard to buy this movie. It is just a movie that is so saturated in drugs that it makes you wonder how you could ever live a day-to-day life without an ether binge. “With a bit of luck, his life was ruined forever. Always thinking that just behind some narrow door in all of his favorite bars, men in red woolen shirts are getting incredible kicks from things he'll never know.“

5. Cry-Baby (1990) ~“Cry Baby”
The stupidest musical ever written. Also staring child-porn star Traci Lords and pre-talk show fame Ricki Lake. A classic story of a fight between good and evil, the oppressed versus those doing the oppression, and of young forbidden love. Throw in songs that are just too ridiculous to mention, a game of chicken, and some jail time and you have a cult classic. “Watch, it's easy. You just open your mouth, and I open mine, and we wiggle our tongues together. And it feels real sexy.”
